Women’s Equality Day in the United States is on August 26, commemorating the Nineteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibited states from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex.
The 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment meant millions of women in the US became eligible to vote. Though full electoral equality was still years away, since Native American, Black American, Asian American, and Latin American women were still excluded on the basis of gender and race, this first step to prohibit gender-based discrimination helped pave the way for future equality movements in the United States.
