John, across the country, extremists are limiting students' education. Do not let extremists fool you, this does not protect students, it only hides the truth from them.
Book bans do nothing but restrict students from imperative information that furthers their education. Without solid fundamentals, students will struggle more and more to progress to higher education. Yet states like Florida are all-in on banning any book they deem unacceptable—a list which in some schools includes significant books like The Diary of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird and others.
We must provide our children with the building blocks for success. Banning books that provide context into history and culture does the exact opposite.
I believe having a well-rounded education was essential in making me a competent and compassionate doctor and leader. I received a great education from kindergarten through medical school in California public schools.
Students in regions that prioritize book bans over knowledge are being held at a massive disadvantage—but they should have access to the same quality education other kids do.
Meanwhile, many Republicans are on a path to privatize public schools and push funding away from those who need it. Now they’re threatening to fire teachers, principals and librarians who go against them and stand up for their students. What will they do next?
American kids have math scores lower than other developed nations, and illiteracy is on the rise. It is unacceptable that the richest country in the world is failing our school systems.
