Eton Star Oldham accepted

Oldham Council, Eton College and Star Academies have welcomed the Department for Education’s decision, to approve plans to open a new free sixth-form college in Oldham.

Eton Star Oldham will recruit dynamic young people who have had fewer opportunities and provide them with a rigorous and rounded education and support them to achieve places at the very best universities.

Students who attend will benefit from an education based on the best that is on offer at Eton and the best of Star Academies, which is, by many metrics, the highest-performing state school trust in the country.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “I’m thrilled that the Government has backed the proposals for a new Eton College and Star Academies sixth form right here in the heart of Oldham.

“For a young person growing up in Oldham, this is really exciting news, as it will open up incredible academic opportunities that will help to enable every child, wherever they live and whatever their background, to fulfill their potential''

Funding boost for Mumps transport scheme

The council has secured £675,000 of funding to start planning work on a major project to improve transport in and around Mumps.

The money will be used to draw up plans for the scheme, which when complete will help deliver real benefits for residents – making sure people are better connected and can access jobs, education and training.

- Oldham Mumps Corridor Improvements – This scheme focuses on delivering better, quicker, and safer access for bus users and people walking and cycling along the corridor (A669 Lees Road, A62 Bottom O’ Th’ Moor/Huddersfield Road, B6194 Cross Street) to the east of Oldham town centre.

These plans will support nearby developments, such as the regeneration of Southlink where up to 150 houses will be built.

The council will also look to improve the area around the existing Mumps transport interchange and create an improved cycle parking hub.

The plan fits with Greater Manchester’s ‘Streets for All’ principles, which look to support transport users and create thriving places that support local communities and businesses.

Council isn’t ‘flush’ with money we continue to improve our facilities for residents

The council is carrying out a £55,000 refurbishment of the toilet block in the Boathouse at Alexandra Park.

The improvement work will include bringing the facilities up to current standards and improving access via the café – a setup used in parks across the borough.

The toilets are currently in a poor state of repair and cannot be accessed from the Boathouse Café without people having to go outside.

As part of the work the existing door will be blocked off and Once everything is finished current tenants of the café, Pure Innovations, will take over management and running responsibilities.

Tour of Britain competition

Oldham is set to take part in the UK’s most prestigious cycle race next week, as the borough features in the first stage of the 2023 Tour of Britain.

Residents will line their streets on Sunday 3 September to watch more than 100 of the world’s top professional cyclists make their way through Saddleworth, Shaw, and Crompton.

This is the second time the borough has hosted this hugely popular event after competitors previously cycled through the town in September 2019.

A competition to reward the best-decorated homes and businesses along the main route has also been organised by the council.

Decorations must tie in with the theme and spirit of the race in order to take part - so plenty of reds, whites, and blues should be on show - and to enter you must complete an online form on the council's website before Monday 4 September. The winning business and homeowner will both receive a voucher worth £100.
