[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Friends -

The Senate has been unable to confirm hundreds of military promotions this year. It’s left many of the most senior posts vacant — impacting our readiness, lowering morale and hurting military families.

And there is one infuriating and absurd reason for this: Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama.

For months, Tommy Tuberville has been blocking Senate approval of hundreds of military promotions. Why? Because the Pentagon announced a policy that would grant leave and cover travel expenses for military personnel who cannot receive abortion care where they are stationed.

This is an abuse of normal procedures that even his fellow Republicans oppose. It is dangerous, it’s beneath the Senate, and I’m fed up. So we need to keep the spotlight and public pressure on Tommy Tuberville.

Will you join me to demand Tommy Tuberville stop blocking military promotions? He cannot be allowed to quietly sabotage our national security and our military’s readiness.

My Democratic colleagues and I have already confronted Tommy Tuberville. We’ve tried to put pressure on Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to end this attack on our military. They all know this is a break in norms from the expedited consideration normally granted for military promotions and personnel.

To force a vote on every individual nominee would take more than the remainder of the year — while also preventing Senate action on any other legislation.

Meanwhile we have a historic number of vacancies among the Joint Chiefs of Staff. We must demand an end to this childishness.

Add your name: Tell Tommy Tuberville to stop blocking military promotions. These nominations must be allowed to proceed at the same pace afforded every previous administration.

This partisan gamesmanship is dangerous for our nation and the world.

Every best wish,

Chris
