**65 Afghan Suspected Terrorists Let Into the US**

-

Over 65 terrorists identified as “national security risks” were allowed into the U.S. in the 12 months after the catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

-

Some of these individuals included militants who left fingerprints on improvised explosive devices (IEDs) intended to kill Americans in Afghanistan, and a prisoner freed by the Taliban.

-

The Biden administration's flawed vetting process and severe staff shortages were cited as reasons for allowing these individuals into the U.S., with around 70 percent of those evacuated from Afghanistan not being American citizens, green card holders, or part of the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.

-

A [**new book**]([link removed] 202308-24&utm_medium=email) has just been published on the disastrous withdrawal, based on hundreds of interviews with servicemembers, senior intelligence officials, high-ranking members of allied governments, and Americans and Afghan allies who were eyewitnesses to the withdrawal.  [Read More]([link removed] 202308-24&utm_medium=email)

 Research and Trends in Extremism

**New Study Shows Social Media and Search Algorithms Contribute to Online Hate**

-

Studies by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Tech Transparency Project (TTP) reveal that major social media platforms and search engines can contribute to the spread of online antisemitism, hate, and extremism.

-

Researchers created online personas to simulate user experiences on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The first study found that three out of four platforms recommended extremist and antisemitic content. YouTube was an exception, resisting recommending such content.

-

The second study focused on search functions, highlighting how these platforms enabled users to easily find hateful content and groups by auto-completing terms and even generating hateful content. Instagram, owned by Meta, was found recommending virulent antisemitic content to a 14-year-old persona.

-

ADL proposes reforms including refining algorithms and recommendation engines to avoid promoting hate content, updating legislation to hold platforms accountable for algorithmic impact on hate and extremism, and enforcing transparency in platform practices.  **[Read More]([link removed] 202308-24&utm_medium=email)**

**Appeals Court Upholds Pro-Life Activists' Claim That DC Selectively Enforced Statute**

-

A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of anti-abortion protesters, citing First Amendment grounds, and stating that Washington, D.C. likely discriminated against them by arresting them for chalking a sidewalk, while not doing the same for Black Lives Matter protesters engaged in similar activity.

-

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously overturned a lower court's opinion, allowing the lawsuit to proceed.

-

The anti-abortion protesters were arrested in 2020 for chalking "Black Pre-Born Lives Matter" on a public sidewalk, while the city seemed to abandon enforcement of the same ordinance for "Black Lives Matter" chalkings after George Floyd's killing. The appeals court emphasized the need for equal treatment of messages in public forums.  **[Read More]([link removed] 202308-24&utm_medium=email)**
