75th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima
Seventy-five years ago, the Battle of Iwo Jima became one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Marine Corps. The sacrifices made by Marines and Sailors during that battle saved the lives of 24,000 crewmen and changed the tide of World War II in the Pacific. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to honor my fellow Marines, including Hoosier Wayne Saucerman, at the Indiana War Memorial, which was covered by The Republic. The unwavering courage and sacrifice of the Marines and Sailors on Iwo Jima is evident by the 27 Medals of Honor awarded during the battle more than any other battle in the history of the United States. Throughout my time at the Naval Academy, and as an officer in the Marine Corps, I gained a deep appreciation for those brave heroes. That’s why I introduced a resolution to honor this sacred day. Visit to Prosperity Indiana
Last Friday, I visited Prosperity Indiana to discuss their efforts to address housing affordability in Indiana. They have been critical to my Fair Shot Agenda and I applaud their mission to foster opportunities for all Hoosiers.
Improving Maternal and Infant Health
Indiana has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the country, which is why I introduced the bipartisan Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act. This legislation would expand broadband access to underserved areas and connect expecting mothers to telemedicine. Last week, I visited with State Representatives Vanessa Summers and Ann Vermillion, State Senator Jean D. Breaux, and Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box to learn more about their initiatives to support expecting Hoosiers mothers.
State Update on the Opioid epidemic
Indiana has been one of the hardest hit states in the nationwide opioid epidemic and I’ve been working to fight back. With bills like the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act containing six of my provisions, I am working to ensure Hoosiers have the resources needed to combat this crisis. Last Friday, I met with Doug Huntsinger, the state of Indiana's Executive Director for Drug Prevention, Treatment and Enforcement, for a statewide update.

Indiana Defense Summit
Friday morning, I spoke at the Indiana Defense Summit about Indiana’s efforts to cultivate a 21st century defense solution with innovations in hypersonics and other programs. I touched on some of my priorities as a member of the Foreign Relations committee, including how Indiana specifically can further integrate in the Department of Defense supply chain and help grow our state’s economy.

Constituent Spotlight
Charles Ward, a veteran from New Palestine, had an appeal that sat at the Indianapolis VA office for four years. After being wrongfully denied multiple times, my office stepped in to help. With the help of my constituent service team, Mr. Ward received over $112,000 in backpay after having not received payment since 1973. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulties with a federal agency, my team can help. Visit https://www.young.senate.gov/help for more.
