Dear Friend, Last night, the Republican candidates had their first debate. It was a circus of political performers pretending to be different from one another and to be of the people. But at the end of the day, all of the Republican candidates are largely the same.
While they might disagree about whether climate change is a hoax, they all agree that we should do nothing about it anyway. While they might have different styles of speaking, they all agree that we should give more and more tax cuts to the rich and the corporations, and slash more and more government benefits to the poor and working class.
This is their real agenda, and they distract you from that by fear mongering about trans women in sports or whatever culture war issue they pretend to care about that week.
We need to expose what they really are, but we cannot do this merely by attacking them. We have to present an alternative that speaks to the needs of working-class Americans. Franklin Delano Roosevelt said that we didn’t have to worry about a fascist takeover as long as democracy delivered on its promises.
Too often, the Democratic Party only runs against Trumpism without offering an inspiring alternative. If I was on the debate stage, I would not only expose the GOP candidates for their hypocrisy, I would also give a vision that helps working-class Americans deal with the bread-and-butter issues that they face. |
From universal healthcare to tuition-free college to child care to paid family leave and a guaranteed living wage; from more resources for our children to focus on peace-building; from the declaration of a Climate Emergency to ending the War on Drugs, our campaign is a serious and meaningful presentation of ideas and policies that would initiate seriously needed change in this country.
I could present these issues to the American people, but the DNC is refusing to hold primary debates. Few Americans are enthusiastic about a rerun of 2020, and President Biden should debate his challengers in order for Democratic voters to decide whether they’d like to choose an alternative as their nominee.
In the meantime, please give what you can to help us get our word out there. Despite the DNC’s efforts to suppress our message, it’s ringing loud and clear wherever it’s heard.
In a democracy, we let the people decide.
