DEMOCRATIC NEWS

It’s Time to Remove Corporal Punishment from All Schools

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, — AUGUST 23, 2023 – The Oklahoma Democratic Party agrees with the Council on School Health and the American Academy of Pediatricians that corporal punishment should be “abolished in all states by law.” Data suggests that corporal punishment doesn’t work in the long run, creating lifelong problems for children. Oklahoma does not have a statewide ban on corporal punishment, but most school districts have discontinued the practice. Still, about 10% still allow it. Read more...

The Oklahoma Democratic Party Pleased Over Resignation

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, — AUGUST 21, 2023 – The Oklahoma Democratic Party supports the governor’s opinion that a special election should be called to fill the seat vacated by Ryan Martinez. Convicted felons do not belong in elected positions making laws when they themselves fail to follow existing laws, and in this case, repeatedly. In October of 2022, Representative Ryan Martinez was found to be in control of a vehicle while intoxicated and recently pleaded to the felony charge.

“While Martinez was not eligible to run as a candidate for the 2024 election cycle, he should have immediately stepped down from his seat once he pleaded guilty to felony charges. We are pleased that he has finally tendered his resignation so that Oklahomans can go to the ballot box and replace him with an Oklahoman who takes their sworn oath to protect our constitution seriously,” stated Alicia Andrews, the Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair. Latest Indictments Should Wake Up Oklahoma’s Leadership

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, — AUGUST 15, 2023 – Like the rest of the United States, many Oklahomans tuned in last night to hear that the former president has now amassed a total of 91 felony charges. This tragedy of destruction against America’s democracy has left Oklahomans feeling completely exhausted. While this is certainly understandable, it does not alleviate the need for everyone to focus on and pay close attention to what is happening in our home state.

“If anything, Oklahoma’s elected officials should more clearly understand that no one, regardless of title or elected position, is above the law. Corruption on any level must never become a normal way of running a city, town, state, or nation,” said Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party.

The FBI, under the umbrella of the US Department of Justice, is investigating Gov. Kevin Stitt and Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, for misuse of federal funds meant to help everyday Oklahomans. Read more...

Oklahoma Democratic Party Statement on Social Security Anniversary

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, — AUGUST 14, 2023 – Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews released the following statement on the 88th anniversary of Social Security becoming law:

“As we celebrate the 88th anniversary of Social Security, we’re reminded that the stakes for its future could not be higher as MAGA Republicans continue to attack this essential program. The contrast couldn’t be more clear: President Biden and Democrats have vowed to protect Social Security while MAGA Republicans running for the highest office in the country are campaigning on slashing it for the $825 thousand Oklahomans who rely on its assistance.
