Social Media, Search Algorithms and the Spread of Online Hate

New studies from ADL and Tech Transparency Project (TTP) show how some of the biggest social media platforms and search engines at times directly contribute to the proliferation of online antisemitism, hate and extremism.

For the studies, researchers created a series of online personas designed to mirror the experiences of real users across four of the biggest social media platforms; YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X.

In one of the most egregious findings, the study found that Instagram recommended virulent and graphic antisemitic content to the persona of a 14-year-old, including a profile filled with anti-Jewish messages.

“These investigations ultimately revealed that tech companies’ hands aren’t tied. Companies have a choice in what to prioritize, including when it comes to tuning algorithms and refining design features to either exacerbate or to curb antisemitism and extremism,” said Yael Eisenstat, ADL Vice President and head of the ADL Center for Technology & Society.

Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the chair and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, last week asking them to hold a public hearing on a spate of recent bomb threats targeting synagogues and other Jewish institutions, allegedly orchestrated by online trolls. ADL also called for legislative action to address the threat.” As we pointed out to the Senators, these trolls employ highly antisemitic language and have targeted over two dozen synagogues and two ADL offices.

ANTISEMITIC ARCHBISHOP: One of the most vocal opponents of modernism, and especially of Pope Francis, is retired

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò... Archbishop Viganò frequently traffics in antisemitic dog whistles that sometimes verge into more overt antisemitism. He has suggested that a “modernist Sanhedrin” is behind the pope’s purported desire to separate Traditionalist Catholics from the official church. In using the term “Sanhedrin,” an ancient Jewish judicial body, Viganò invokes a fringe belief among Traditionalist Catholics that Jews have secretly infiltrated and corrupted the Catholic hierarchy — a charge that is antisemitic and false.

BAD ATTITUDES: ADL has documented a substantive overlap between belief in anti-Jewish tropes and anti-Israel sentiment across all respondents in our most recent survey of antisemitic attitudes in the United States. Among the thousands of people we surveyed, older adults are more likely to hold these overlapping beliefs. Understanding the relationships between antisemitic and anti-Israel attitudes will help ADL target our efforts to reduce these problematic beliefs as we launch new programs. EDUCATING EUROPE: With antisemitic incidents and attitudes continuing to be a challenge across Europe, it’s no surprise that a workshop by ADL about ‘how to spot extremist symbols’ was well attended last week at “Summer U,” an annual gathering hosted by the European Union of Jewish Students. ADL, through our Words to Actions trainings, has quickly become the largest provider of antisemitism education to Jewish young adults in Europe.
