Rent shouldn't cost more than 30% of your salary. Yet this is the reality for 21.6 million American households, according to Harvard’s The State of the Nation’s Housing 2023 study.
Sign the petition: Congress must pass the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act!
We have an affordable housing crisis in America, and corporate greed is making it worse. Wall Street enables private equity firms to snap up single-family residential homes nationwide. This not only allows corporations to charge excessive rents, but it also blocks the road to homeownership, making the American Dream harder than ever to reach, especially for working- and middle-class families.
It’s time for Congress to put an end to Wall Street’s real estate grab by passing my Stop Wall Street Landlords Act. This legislation would ban private equity firms from obtaining loans backed by the Federal Housing Finance Agency and related government entities for the purchase of single-family residential homes, while also cutting off taxpayer funding for existing loans. With these tax savings, the federal government would then establish neighborhood homes tax credits to offset the cost of constructing or rehabilitating owner-occupied homes for state and local governments.
Whether they seek to rent or to own, every American deserves access to affordable housing. Let’s tell Congress to pass the Stop Wall Street Landlords Act and stamp out housing inequality.
