Movement Labs’ key takeaways from the GOP presidential debates in Milwaukee.

Did you watch the first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 cycle, John?

If not, we don't blame you — that's not our ideal evening entertainment, either. But here are our key takeaways from the debate stage in Milwaukee:

  • Trump is (still, somehow) dominating the conversation.
Even when he's not on the debate stage, (hanging out on Twitter with Tucker is similar, right?) Trump is still a driving force for discussion. They all have a similar ideology and many said they would still support him even if he was convicted. When it comes down to it, these folks will never break up with Trump – if they aren't the nominee themselves, they'll do and say anything to make it onto his VP shortlist.

  • Despite national polling showing upwards of 70% of Americans are pro-choice, the GOP will continue its attack on reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. It's just a matter of how far they feel comfortable going in primary season.
DeSantis lauded his aggressive restrictions to reproductive freedom, while the only woman on the stage, Nikki Haley, continued her habit of dodging the question. A real girl's girl, she suggested that a nationwide abortion ban wouldn't be able to get the 60 Senate votes needed to pass — but narrower legislation in the states could work. Gee thanks, Nikki.

  • For Trump and his MAGA followers, the 2020 election will forever be "stolen."
Tucker Carlson played right into one of Trump's longest-lasting and most destructive claims: that he won the 2020 election and that Joe Biden is an illegitimate president. They even played up the idea that the same thing could happen again in 2024. We all know his radical followers are capable of real harm the more he pushes and the more they believe that we are not living in a free democracy.

  • And don't worry — that unprecedented hurricane in Southern California, rampant wildfires across the continent, and jacuzzi temperatures in the Atlantic are no big deal. Climate change is still a hoax.

It's going to be a long election season, John. Will you help us tackle whatever the GOP throws at us this cycle by chipping in $3 today?

We've seen this before and while it's emotional and just plain irritating to have to rehash things like abortion rights, the climate crisis, and whether candidates facing criminal charges should be allowed to run for president — we know what it takes to fight back and win.

Movement Labs is doing our part by recruiting, training, and mobilizing Democratic candidates in otherwise unopposed races up and down the ballot.
