Dear MoveOn member,

Last night, Republican presidential hopefuls promised to ban abortion
nationwide, called the climate crisis a "hoax," and pledged to pardon
Donald Trump for his crimes, including attempting to overthrow the U.S.
government.^1

The media described the entire debate as, in actuality, tryouts for who
will be Trump's vice presidential candidate, since Trump remains the
unrivaled front-runner for the GOP nomination.^2

Today, Trump is expected to surrender to authorities in Fulton County,
Georgia, on RICO and other criminal charges for trying to overturn the
state's election results. He'll get his mug shot taken, pay a $200,000
bond, and then be out on bail in a fourth jurisdiction (now New York,
Florida, Washington, D.C., and Georgia).^3

John, we need to be clear-eyed and not discount Trump, as so
many did in 2016, because Trump has a very good chance of winning a second
term next year.

So, if you haven't yet gotten involved with next year's election, now is
the time to get off the sidelines. MoveOn is preparing to launch the
biggest election program of our 25-year history, and we need your help to
make it happen.

This email is not about just rehashing what happened last night during the
first Republican presidential primary debate and Trump's interview with
Tucker Carlson—if you've seen any footage, you know it was an abomination
from start to finish. No, instead, we want to share the first steps we are
taking to make sure that no GOP candidate wins in 2024. Here is what we
are rolling out:

* A massive effort to disqualify Trump from the ballot. The 14th
Amendment makes it clear that no person who has engaged in
insurrection against the United States may ever hold office again. We
are calling on secretaries of state across the country to do their
constitutional duty by refusing to certify Trump as a candidate for
president, and our call is gaining momentum. Just last week, two
conservative lawyers from the Federalist Society joined our call to
disqualify Trump, and last night, Republican presidential candidate
Asa Hutchinson also shared his support.^4,5 Our petition has almost
400,000 signatures.

* A major ad campaign to ensure that voters know exactly what crimes
Trump has committed. Polling is beginning to show that these
indictments are starting to stick to Trump, and we need to keep
educating voters so that people who don't closely follow the news know
about the crimes he committed and are motivated to vote to ensure that
Trump loses. We are planning a huge, monthslong ad campaign to hammer
that message home all the way until Election Day. This work is even
more vital after the purposeful cover-up of his crimes during last
night's interview.

* The largest voter turnout campaign we have ever run. As these charges
remind us, Trump lost Georgia by only a razor-thin margin in 2020,
which means that every single vote is critical. MoveOn will be
expanding our successful work from 2020 and 2022 to turn out
"high-potential voters"—voters of color and young voters who otherwise
might not vote—in swing districts and states, using innovative digital
and on-the-ground strategies.

* Direct support for ballot measures and candidates who will protect
abortion rights. Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, we have seen over and
over again that abortion is an issue that motivates people to the
polls. In every election where abortion has been on the ballot since
2022, abortion rights have won. Highlighting the attacks on abortion
and bodily autonomy and championing candidates and ballot measures
will be a critical component of our turnout strategy—and are urgently
needed to save lives, hopes, and dreams.

Our work goes beyond this post-debate moment, and we'll be running these
campaigns (and more!) until Election Day 2024. But we need your help to
fund this work.

John, this year, MoveOn is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Twenty-five years of fighting the radical right. Twenty-five years of
building a grassroots, people-powered movement to push for progressive
policies. And 25 years of innovating better and better ways to engage,
energize, and turn out voters to win elections.

For 25 years, we have been a leader in this movement, and with your help,
we will take that leadership into 2024 and beyond to fight for an America
where everyone can thrive.

The messages shared by the GOP candidates last night were wrong. They were
dangerous. And they must be defeated.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to
right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from
their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile,"
filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around
to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will
attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into
2024, we need your help.
