Dear John,

It's a parent's worst nightmare. You learn that your school district has been willfully hiding the fact that your son or daughter has changed his or her "gender identity." A news outlet recently revealed more than 1,000 school districts across the country, including several in Minnesota, that explicitly keep parents in the dark about this potentially life-changing decision by your minor child.

Minnesota Family Council's research quickly uncovered several more of Minnesota's largest school districts who are hiding information from parents, including Minneapolis Public Schools and Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose schools.

If you have reason to believe your child's school district has policies in place that would hide a student's claimed gender identity from parents or legal guardian, please contact us now.

In the meantime, will you consider a gift to fund our work shining a light for life, family, and religious freedom in Minnesota?

Your one-time gift of $25, $50, or $100 to Minnesota Family Council helps us fight at the Capitol and in school districts across the state for the values we share. Your tax-deductible gift of the same amount to Minnesota Family Institute helps us raise awareness of the activities of politicians and school board members so that YOU can hold them accountable.

The Daily Signal and an organization called Parents Defending Education have done amazing work uncovering schools across the country who are hiding students' gender identity from their parents. But as soon as we saw the list for Minnesota, we knew more research was needed.

Using publicly availably data, we quickly uncovered that many of Minnesota's largest school districts are engaged in deceiving parents. We have shared our findings with Parents Defending Education. Here's how Minnesota's ten largest school districts fare:

Would this district hide students' gender identity information from their parents?

  1. Anoka-Hennepin Schools (38k students): Unclear
  2. St. Paul Public Schools (33k students): Yes (source: Parents Defending Education)
  3. Minneapolis Public Schools (30k students): Yes (source: Minnesota Family Council research)
  4. Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Schools (30k students): No (source: MFC research)
  5. Osseo Area Schools (20k students):  No (source: MFC research)
  6. South Washington County Schools (19k students): Unclear
    1. Consulting parents is listed as a "best practice" but not required. However, if a parent asks about this information, the district believes it is legally bound to provide it. Source: MFC research
  7. Rochester Public Schools (17k students): Unclear
    1. MFC research uncovered the following statement from RPS: "We believe that every student and staff member has the right...to be addressed by their preferred name and by pronouns which correspond to their gender identity."
  8. Elk River Schools (13k students): Unclear
    1. MFC research uncovered the following statement from Elk River Schools:

"We believe that one’s gender and sexuality are important parts of one’s identity which deserve to be genuinely accepted and valued."

  9. Wayzata Public Schools (12k students): Unclear
  10. Mounds View Public Schools (11k students): Unclear
    1. Recent events indicate a culture of disrespect for parents (and students) at Mounds View Public Schools on this issue

We want to be able to help every parent in Minnesota who reaches out to us when a school district is definitely or possibly hiding information from parents. Will you help us?

Your contribution of $25, $50, or $100 helps us hold Minnesota school districts and school board members accountable. For forty years, we have been working to protect Christian values in our state - with your help, we can continue that work for years to come!

Let's recap. Of Minnesota's ten largest school districts, two are committed to hiding a child's gender identity from parents, six may do so (publicly available documents are unclear), and only two explicitly require that a minor's self-chosen gender identity be disclosed to parents.

John, this is tragic. We shouldn't even be having to ask whether school districts will withhold critical information from parents. We need to ask God to help us bring light to this situation, so that Minnesotans know what school districts are actually doing. I hope you will help me in this endeavor. Thank you for your support.
