If we fall short of our Summer Campaign fundraising target, we’ll have to face some very tough decisions.Friend,

Yesterday we told you about how Facebook recently changed its news feed
algorithm to effectively shut out independent news sources like Common
Dreams—and what a severe threat this is to our ability to attract new
readers and ultimately fund our operations.

In response, some of you asked why we would ever rely on Facebook in the
first place. After all, we’ve known for years that Mark Zuckerberg
can’t be trusted, and he certainly doesn't share our values.

But here’s the reality: Facebook has controlled so much of what people
see and read online for so long that there’s no way for any news
outlet not to be harmed by the changes they’ve made to their
algorithm.

Let’s be clear: Common Dreams is better positioned than many others to
weather this storm. We never went "all in" with Facebook, and we
haven’t laid off staff or filed for bankruptcy, like so many others.
But if we fall short of our Summer Campaign fundraising target, we’ll
have to face some very tough decisions.

Will you donate today and help meet our Summer Campaign fundraising goal
of $80,000 by September 1?
