Dear John,

Our region is growing exponentially and we must ensure that every North Texan has access to the education and training they need to get a good job and succeed. 

That’s why I recently hosted a roundtable in Garland with North Texas education leaders, businesses and labor leaders. The topics of discussion included expanding job training, connecting businesses with students, talent retention, and ensuring that higher education and certifications are accessible and affordable.

Participants were comprised of leaders from across North Texas, including Garland Independent School District, Dallas County Community College District, American Airlines, Texas Instruments, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Parkland Hospital, Garland Chamber of Commerce, R&B Roofing and the Southwest Pipe Trades Association.

We must ensure that we are training and educating the next generation of workers so North Texas can continue to be one of the most competitive economic regions in the nation. I thank all who joined me to discuss the needs of our community and the work I’ve been doing in Congress. 

Last year, I voted to invest in better schools and job training in the recently passed spending bill for the 2020 fiscal year. I also cosponsored the Jumpstart Our Businesses by Supporting Students Act, which will expand Pell Grant eligibility to qualifying short-term training programs and help more Americans gain access to industry-recognized credentials.

It is so important that our community colleges, universities, businesses and labor unions all work together to make sure everyone has a chance to pursue their version of the American Dream. I look forward to continuing that work to make that a reality for all North Texans.
