** Welcome to my Autumn 2023 newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------
I hope everyone has had a relaxing summer, despite the uncertain weather. I would first like to thank everyone who attended my Jobs Fair back in June, it was brilliant to see over 400 people attend. This month we have had the first deliveries of my latest survey, which have been going out across Singleton, and will soon come to an area near you. Please do fill these surveys out as it really helps me understand the issues that most affect you. This summer there has been a lot going on including the opening of a new array of facilities at Victoria Park. I also particularly enjoyed the Kent County Show which really highlights all that our region has to offer.
** Join my Social Care Campaign!
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to everyone who has joined my Social Care Campaign so far. For decades Government’s have promised that they will solve the social care crisis, but in reality not enough has changed. I will deliver an open letter to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, showing them that 1000s of people, like you and I, want to see change now. If you haven’t already, you can find out more about my campaign and join below.

** Age UK
------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve been working with Age UK for a long time championing the social care sector and it was great to attend their summer reception in Parliament.
** Football Foundation
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s great to hear about the projects that Football Foundation are funding in Ashford, including Mersham Sports Club.
** The George Pub Reopens
------------------------------------------------------------
The Geroge Pub in Bethersden reopened following its two year closure after an effort by residents to raise £300,000 to buy the pub. This more than matched a Government grant of £250,000.
** William Harvey Hospital
------------------------------------------------------------
In the week of the NHS’ 75th Anniversary, it was good to be shown the new Children’s Emergency Department at the William Harvey, part of a £30 million investment in East Kent.
** What’s happening in Parliament?
------------------------------------------------------------
There has been a lot of activity in Parliament before the summer recess period started. In June, the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan was released which will train and retain more staff to deliver patient care over the next 15 years. The plan includes a commitment to significantly increase the number of domestic medical school, GP and adult nurse training places by 2031. Combined with measures to retain existing staff, this plan could lead to an extra 60,000 doctors, 170,000 more nurses and 71,000 more allied health professionals by 2036/37. Implementing this plan will deliver more staff for the NHS and help deliver on the priority of significantly cutting NHS waiting lists.
I am aware that many constituents are concerned about the high cost of our asylum system. The Illegal Migration Act has now come into force which means that someone who enters this country illegally will be swiftly detained and removed back to their home country if it safe, or to a safe third country.
In the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee we recently published the report on our Connected Tech: Smart or Sinister inquiry. While connected tech can have a range of benefits including improved efficiency, safety, security and health, the Government must be aware of the risks and harms associated with their use including a loss of privacy, online safety concerns and broadening patterns of domestic abuse.

Our Man in Westminster - Celebrating the Kent County Show 2023 ([link removed])
In the midst of a good deal of difficulty in the world the annual rituals of the Kent Show are a great consolation. It always helps when the weather shines on it, as it did when I visited on the Friday, but in any case it is a reminder of the permanent rhythms of life in the County.

Our Man in Westminster - Local GP and NHS Services ([link removed])
The ability to make an appointment to see your GP easily and at a convenient time is one of the best aspects of the NHS. So when it is difficult, as it has been for too long since the pandemic ended, people get angry, as my email inbox has testified over recent months.
