Friends,
Last night, the Republican National Committee hosted its first debate of the GOP primary season, with eight Republican presidential hopefuls, notably excluding former President Trump.
This first debate set the stage for the policy issues and rhetoric that will dominate this crowded primary, and Data for Progress wanted to hear from voters. Here’s what we found:
-
46% of voters say it is too soon to tell whether Biden and Trump will be the eventual presidential nominees
-
1 in 3 voters believe 2024 will be between Biden and Trump
-
We found that several policy proposals from the current GOP presidential candidates are unpopular among voters, including cutting funding for Social Security and Medicare, allowing concealed carry of guns without a permit, restricting access to abortion pills, and more
We polled voters before this first GOP primary debate, and now we need to rush more polling in the field to see how the content of last night’s debate impacted voters’ views. Rush a contribution today and help fund this urgent polling:

Current polling has Trump far ahead of the pack for the Republican nomination, but his absence at last night’s debate gave the other Republican candidates an opportunity to change the narrative.
Our polling makes clear that voters don’t necessarily think there’s a guaranteed candidate for 2024, which means highlighting Republican policy proposals and polling on their popularity with voters will be extremely important in the coming weeks.
The next GOP primary debate is September 27, and we want to get more rapid response polling out before then on voters’ favorability of the candidates and their policy positions. Will you rush a contribution today to get our polling in the field?
