Dear members and allies,
A low-income fare at the MBTA is central to ensuring transit equity and justice in Massachusetts. Community Labor United and our Public Transit Public Good Coalition are thrilled to celebrate a major milestone in our fight to create an affordable, accessible MBTA. Governor Maura Healey recently signed a new state budget that includes $5 million towards a reduced-fare program for low-income MBTA riders! This revenue builds on our recent success in moving the MBTA’s recent decision to establish a low-income fare program, and designates Fair Share revenue to fund the program.
Our victories at the MBTA and on Beacon Hill are direct testament to the profound impact of riders and workers raising our voices together – from public testimony at board meetings and rallies outside the state house, to the successful passage of the Fair Share Amendment. When we fight, we win!
We thank our representatives, senators, and the Healey Administration for standing with us and advancing this essential line item. With this budget, our elected officials have shown they are committed to ensuring the MBTA is affordable and accessible for all riders.
However, in order to guarantee a lasting program for future riders – no matter the changing political landscape – we must pass H.3373/S.2231 to require the MBTA always provides reduced fares to low-income riders.
Take action with the Public Transit Public Good Coalition by urging your state representative and senator to cosponsor H.3373, An Act relative to low income transit fares, and S.2231, An Act establishing a program for low income fares.
