What data are states sharing on report cards?

State report cards are the first and oldest federal mandate to share information publicly with families and communities. But seven years in, there is still work to be done.

States must prioritize collecting and sharing information that gives families and communities a full picture of how schools are serving their students and that helps students and their families make decisions about the future.

As a part of DQC’s annual review of state report cards, we took a deeper look at what information states are sharing—and have released two new resources:

Show Me the Data 2023 Deep Dive: Postsecondary Pathways. ([link removed]) Students and their families need information on how high schools prepare students for postsecondary pathways and what student outcomes are after high school. This deep dive examines how states reported postsecondary pathways data on their 2022 report cards and points out opportunities for states to provide better information to students and families.

Science Education Data Is Valuable for Understanding Student and School Progress. ([link removed]) Access to data about students’ science education opportunities, outcomes, and instruction gives parents and families a more complete picture of the education their students are receiving. This resource details the importance of reporting on science education data and, based on DQC’s annual review of state report cards, shares how states are currently making science education data available on their state report cards.
