Here are 3 steps that we can, and must take to reduce the human toll of gun violence:

1.
Raise
the
legal
age
to
buy
a
firearm
to
21:
Since
2018,
6
out
of
the
9
deadliest
mass
shootings
were
committed
by
killers
under
the
age
of
21.
Compared
to
those
21
and
older,
people
aged
18-20
commit
firearm
homicides
at
3
times
the
rate.
2.
3.
Promote
safe
storage:
3
out
of
4
school
shooters
obtained
their
weapon
from
either
home
or
a
close
relative,
and
3
out
of
4
youth
suicides
involved
an
unsecured
weapon.
4.
5.
Reinstate
the
assault
weapons
ban:
During
the
assault
weapons
ban
from
1994-2004,
mass
shooting
decreased,
and
then
had
an
immediate
increase
after
expiration.

Through my career as a trauma surgeon, I’ve treated too many victims of gun violence – too many instances of preventable death and suffering due to firearms. It’s what inspired me to run for Congress, to advocate for immediate action to end this gun violence epidemic.
