Anderrson
Dear Neighbor,
It?s been nice attending so many events throughout our district as we make our way into the final month of this summer, including:
The 84th annual Cornfest in Ortonville ?
Ortonville
Belgrade August Fest ?
Belgrade
And a meeting with Stevens County officials at the site of a six-unit daycare facility in Morris. The county utilized $1 million in federal APRA dollars to finance the project. Construction began last summer and was finished in July. By the end of September, all six of the units will be in use, providing space for 60 to 70 youngsters. The units were built on land that was once part of the Morris school district. Prior to starting the project, county commissioners held a series of town hall meetings with current daycare providers, along with businesses and parents, to determine the extent of need for additional daycare spots. It's a unique idea, one that is being looked at by other units of government.

As for notes from the Capitol:
*New laws*
Several new laws took effect this month, including the legalization of recreational marijuana in our state.?The law was pushed through by the DFL majority, and it leaves many questions unanswered at the same time it takes effect. I wrote about this subject in a recent newspaper column. Please check your local publications for the full text, or you also can find it here [ [link removed] ].
*Increased nursing home funding*
Nursing homes in House District 12A have begun receiving shares of the $300 million infusion in state funding fellow House Republicans and I championed and the Legislature provided last May.
This funding is a step toward stabilizing Minnesota?s struggling long-term care industry, with?nursing homes closing across the state and others on the financial brink. Families are waiting months and looking up to four hours away to find a safe place for loved ones, with a worker shortage having left around 25 percent of nursing home caregiver jobs vacant.
This welcome funding will certainly help our nursing homes and provide them with some additional dollars to improve their cash flows. Finding the workers necessary to operate on a daily basis has been a challenge. This funding will help attract and retain those important staff members who take care of our elderly residents. I am pleased House Republicans successfully negotiated increased funding for nursing homes after Gov. Tim Walz and House Democrats dedicated just $3.9 million to new nursing home funding in their original budget proposals for the new biennium.
In District 12A, Appleton Area Health ($413,776), Belgrade Nursing Home ($361,561), Glenwood Village Care Center ($482,057), Essentia Health Grace Home in Graceville ($385,661), West Wind Village in Morris ($514,189), Fairway View Neighborhoods in Ortonville ($429,842), and Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck ($381,644) received the first half of those funding totals earlier this month, with the remaining portions due Aug. 1, 2024.
*Back-to-school tax savings*
The cost of purchasing back-to-school supplies can quickly add up, so people are encouraged to save receipts and take advantage of tax benefits that can provide some relief.??
Minnesota has both a K-12 education credit and a K-12 education subtraction for school-related expenses. Both programs reduce the taxes parents pay and could provide a larger refund when filing state income taxes. Qualifications apply and expenses must be for children attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private, or home school.?
School supplies that qualify for the credit or subtraction include writing utensils, textbooks, musical instrument rentals, tutoring, and computer hardware/educational software. Parents are encouraged to check the Department of Revenue website [ [link removed] ] to determine which expenses qualify.
Watch for more notes from the House soon and, for now, please stay in touch and good luck as we start the new school year and the fall sports season.
Sincerely,
Paul
