First, Happy Birthday to my sister! No matter what you call her, That Woman from Michigan, The Wicked Whitmer of the West or Big Gretch, my big sister has always been an excellent source of advice, constructive criticism that only a sibling can deliver, support, and laughter. The older I get (which will always be younger than she is) the more I appreciate family, old friends, new friends, and community.
When I started kindergarten it was only a half day. On my first day, Gretchen, in second grade, managed to talk her teacher into letting her walk me home to make sure I got there. Her concern for others and negotiation skills at the age of seven were exceptional, so when people ask me if I am surprised by all she has accomplished and the craziness she has lived through, my answer is not even a little bit.
# [#]In our family we were brought up to believe that if you were in the position to help someone out, it was a duty. That you should never punch down, but be unafraid to punch up. And that humor and laughter is critical in dark and confusing times.
So as we near the end of summer, maybe it’s just a little reminder to celebrate our loved ones, find moments of joy, take care of yourself, eat some vegetables (that’s her line) and then get up and do good work again tomorrow.
Happy Birthday Gretchen!
:)
