There's nothing more fundamental to our democracy than the idea that every one of us should have a fair, equal say in our representation. But when partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression come into play, some votes mathematically count more than others.

North Carolina has seen the consequences of unfair legislative maps before — and courts have previously struck down extreme NC maps as a violation of our state Constitution. By allowing the legislators who draw maps to effectively choose their own voters, partisan gerrymandering strips the voters of their voice.

Far-right legislators in Raleigh have hinted for months that they plan to once again enact a partisan gerrymander of our state.

Here’s what that means: Republican elected officials want the power to choose their own voters rather than allow the voters to choose their representatives.

North Carolina voters deserve to know that their voice matters in our elections. That’s the basis of our democracy itself.
