Mifepristone is under attack. Again.
Last week, a federal court ruled [[link removed]] that Mifepristone, one of the main drugs used in medication abortions, can be restricted. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decided that the FDA was incorrect for approving Mifepristone to be prescribed after 7 weeks into pregnancy and via telehealth. This directly conflicts with science—Mifepristone is safe and effective for use through at least the 10th week of pregnancy. Prescription via the phone or online is not only safe, but also crucial for providing access to rural and low-income patients.
But here’s why we don’t need to panic (yet): the Supreme Court has stated that nothing relating to Mifepristone will change until it hears another case next year. That means, until we’re told otherwise, access to this critical medication will continue status quo.
