Council of State Governments

This week I’m attending the Council of State Governments East 62nd Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada with some of my fellow colleagues from the Pennsylvania State Legislature. We’ve joined delegates from other Northeast State Legislatures from Maryland to Maine, as well as officials from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and our eastern Canadian counterparts to address a range of public policy issues, share ideas, and bridge communications.

The panel discussions have focused on topics such as early childhood education, mental health, transportation sectors, climate and environment, artificial intelligence, veterans affairs, and much more. I’m honored to be invited and included in this Council and looking forward to next year!

School Renaming Ceremonies

Last Friday I attended Norristown School District’s school renaming ceremonies for the Alice Davenport Elementary School on Oak Street and the Charles Blockson Middle School on Marshall Street. I was joined by state Sen. Amanda Cappelletti, Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder, Norristown School Board Directors, Township Commissioners, teachers, family members and more as we honored the two Norristown natives who were dedicated to their community, and whose names are now immortalized in the school district.

Alice Davenport was the first Black school teacher in Norristown, hired in 1952 teaching children in kindergarten through third grade, Davenport and also founded Montgomery County’s Equal Opportunity Program and was a vocal community activist. She would go on to serve on the board of directors for the Montgomery Hospital and the Norristown Public Library.

Charles Blockson born in Norristown, became a world-renowned historian of African American culture, assembling the world’s largest collection of African American history, culture, and contributions that consists of nearly a million historical documents, photographs, letters, books, sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts and is shared between Temple University and Penn State.

Both were extraordinary individuals deserving of this recognition and honor.

I’ve partnered with Giant Pharmacy for a Vaccine Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023. We will be in the Upper Providence Township Building from 2pm to 4pm. Make an appointment and ensure your spot today! Walk-ins are not allowed.
