🏗️ CalMatters: Unlocking Billions of Dollars for Housing

Our coalition’s efforts to amend the state constitution are getting noticed!

As we work to place on the 2024 statewide ballot a measure that has the potential to unlock billions to help millions of Californians afford housing, CalMatter’s Ben Christopher explores the crux of the matter: our local governments have faced a daunting ⅔ voter threshold for bonds and taxes that fund affordable housing and a wide array of public infrastructure projects.

The proposed constitutional amendment could help local governments and communities meet their housing goals by lowering the 2/3 voter threshold for communities to pass local housing bonds.

NPH’s Policy Director, Abram Diaz, weighs in via the article: “Making it easier for local governments to raise funds for affordable housing will also make it easier for those governments to compete for matching state and federal cash . . . If we’re gonna do these big statewide efforts, ensuring the locals also do their piece and have the tools they need to meet us halfway is really important.”

ACA-1 Press Conference Assembly Speaker pro-Temp Aguiar-Curry hosted a press conference and rally last week to support ACA-1, the proposed constitutional amendment mentioned above. Other legislators and advocates joined her, including NPH staff! Watch the full presser here.
