** PEAK’s Knowledge Inquiry Project
------------------------------------------------------------

Although learning and evaluation are often talked about in the field, “knowledge work” is less understood. A quick analysis of the PEAK membership roster shows us that knowledge roles are becoming more focused within grantmaking. “Knowledge work” as an umbrella term can touch all job descriptions in philanthropy, and currently more than 10 percent of our members hold titles that include terms like knowledge, learning, evaluation, and research.

PEAK has the opportunity to bridge the gap and support our members in seeing the key leadership position they hold, ensuring that knowledge work and equity are aligned within philanthropy.

PEAK launched our knowledge inquiry project with Knowledge Designs to Change, a research partner in philanthropy, with the delivery of a deep-dive pre-convening session at PEAK2023. As next steps, we are fielding a Knowledge Work Survey and will soon hold Insight Sessions (small group conversations) to learn even more from the broader membership, and we are reviewing partner information about the evolution of knowledge work in the field. The outputs of this project will inform the updated Grants Management Competency Model in 2024, the evolution of the Principles for Peak Grantmaking, and more.

Our ask of you? Take our survey ([link removed]) and share with us how knowledge work shows up in your role at your organization, share your challenges, and help us identify the ways PEAK can support you. At the end of the survey, you'll find a link to sign up to participate in one of six Insights Sessions we're hosting this fall. Questions? Reach out to Programs and Knowledge DirectorLita Pardi (mailto:[email protected]) .

** Supporting Our Team With Sabbaticals
------------------------------------------------------------

As part of PEAK’s commitment to supporting the growth and wellness of our team members, we adopted a four-year milestone sabbatical policy this year. This policy allows team members who have reached their fourth work anniversary to take extended time off to pursue personal or professional growth, travel, or simply recharge. This month, Senior Operations Manager Carolyn Sosnowski and Membership and Community Engagement Director Sara Sanders are on sabbatical.

** JOURNAL
------------------------------------------------------------

** Last Call: Contribute to Our Next Journal
------------------------------------------------------------

Coming this fall, the next issue of the Journal will take a deep dive into our Learn, Share, Evolve Principle ([link removed]) . We are looking for short stories that lift up how members of the PEAK community are leading the way in the evolution of philanthropy. Cocreate this edition with us by sharing
* how your organization listens to and learns from your nonprofit partners and shares that knowledge;
* ways you have supported people working in nonprofits; or
* how insights from grantee reports inspired action.

Send us a short description of the story you’d like to share by September 1.

** PEER NETWORK SPOTLIGHT
------------------------------------------------------------

PEAK offers members diverse peer spaces for learning, sharing, and evolving in our thriving chapters ([link removed]) and peer groups ([link removed]) . Each month, we showcase the meaningful programming and networking taking place in these volunteer-led spaces.

** PEAK Chapter Summer Cafés
------------------------------------------------------------

Summertime coffee hours have got several chapters buzzing, by offering fun, informal opportunities to stay connected both virtually and in-person. A group of PEAK Pacific Northwest members in the Salem, Oregon area meets in person every other month to discuss philanthropy and current events, troubleshoot issues in grantmaking, and network. In interim months, they host coffee hours on Zoom so that all chapter members can be included and participate. PEAK Minnesota took advantage of the sunny summer weather to meet up for an informal coffee chat at the McKnight Foundation in downtown Minneapolis. This was their first time meeting locally in person since 2019! And PEAK Midwest offered a special virtual coffee chat focused on new members, featuring a tour of the PEAK website and small networking groups.

** PEAK in Community
------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s the latest on how PEAK is engaging with members, partners, nonprofits, and allies in advocating for transformative change and leading the way in advancing equitable and effective grantmaking practices.

President and CEO Satonya Fair lectured on “Moving From Scarcity to Abundance” as a part of Bowie State University's Philanthropy Fellowship Seminar Series, a joint venture of the BSU College of Business and ABFE. These seminars provide opportunities for mutual sharing, group projects, and substantive instruction and guidance for the eight BSU fellows, with each session beginning with a guest presentation by a senior executive from a philanthropic or nonprofit organization.
Satonya joined Resilia’s Anthony Simmons and Grantmakers for Education’s Nicole Rodriguez Leach for “Elevate Learning Session: Navigating Affirmative Action's Reversal and Philanthropy's Role in Shaping a Just and Equitable Future.” During the session, they delved into the impacts of the recent US Supreme Court decision, explored how philanthropy can respond, and identified actionable strategies for the road ahead.

Last month, a group of PEAK staff members participated in the United Philanthropy Forum’s 2023 conference in New York City. Senior Communications Director Betsy Reid supported by serving on the planning committee while Satonya supported the planning committee for the pre-conference CEO gathering. Congratulations to the Forum team (shown below) for hosting their largest conference to date and an invaluable opportunity to connect with our PSO colleagues and explore our unique role in advancing, informing, mobilizing, and convening the sector.
The Forum team is featured on the stage, holding photos up of staff members who couldn't join on their phones. All are smiling.
