Hi, it’s Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18). Last year, we sent shockwaves around the country when we won an unprecedented August Special Election in Upstate New York.

It was about freedom: I joined the race two weeks after the leaked SCOTUS decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. The writing was on the wall. A radicalized SCOTUS propped up by far-right politicians was preparing to deliver the most egregious attack on American freedoms I’d seen in my lifetime: stripping women of bodily autonomy and overturning Roe v. Wade. It was inconceivable, but worse, I knew It wouldn’t end there. Extremists were going to fight until they banned abortion nationwide. It’s the opposite of everything I’ve spent my life fighting to defend.

I swore an oath to defend this country when I attended West Point. Later, I served two combat tours in Iraq. If Washington extremists were going to have this fight, I was getting in it too. Because I’m a patriot, and patriots fight on the side of freedom.

And the Hudson Valley proved it was on the side of freedom on August 23, 2022.

We did it because we were unequivocal about the stakes.

We pulled no punches despite all the ‘conventional wisdom’ that would indicate a GOP victory. We won a special election in Upstate New York with a very basic strategy: protect freedom.

It’s been a year. The fight isn’t over. We will win some battles and lose others, but I am sure that the strength and resolve of patriots standing united will always win. It always has. I’ll be in the ring as long as it takes, and I hope you’ll stand with me.
