Legislative Update
The League of Minnesota Cities and the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association raised concerns [ [link removed] ] recently over the DFL's changes to student disciplinary policy, specifically language banning certain physical holds. According to the Police Chiefs,
In the amended Minnesota Statute sections 121A.58 and 121A.582, the language now ?prohibits the use of prone restraint.? The authority to use force for the sole purpose of restraining a student has been removed from law. As a result, using a prone restraint circumstances in any situation, including the threat of death or bodily harm is no longer an option.
Many local law enforcement officers have expressed concerns about this change, because it removes tools that school resource officers use to deescalate violent or aggressive situations in schools. We need to focus on the safety of everybody who attends and works in our local schools, and this change will make each and every one of them less safe.
In addition, the language passed in this bill is confusing and conflicts with other laws, which will make it very difficult to comply with. Because it will be so hard to implement, it could open school resource officers and districts to increased liability if they inadvertently implement it incorrectly.
I will continue advocating for changes that make schools safer instead of taking away the tools our school resource officers can use to keep students and staff safe.
Coldspring
Local Visits
I had the opportunity last week to tour the Coldspring company, and I learned so much about what they do and the way they've impacted the local community over the last 125 years. I enjoyed learning more about everything they do, hearing from employees, and talking about the issues that impact their business at the state level!
Celebrate MN
Summertime By George
In the past few weeks, I've had the opportunity to volunteer at both Celebrate MN and Summertime by George with the St. Cloud Rotary. It's great to be out and about in the community, and thank you to everyone who stopped me to say hi!
