This month, we celebrate the 88th anniversary of Social Security. President FDR signed the Social Security Act to change the lives of our most vulnerable communities.
Let’s make this clear: Social Security is not a gift or a handout. Rather, it is an essential resource that Americans work and pay into their entire lives.
People deserve to reap the benefits of their hard work. Far too many of our seniors are living in poverty, and as the richest country on earth this is unacceptable. Working as a doctor, I’ve seen many seniors struggle to keep a roof over their head and end up sick.
Extremists are relentless in their attacks on Social Security. They try to cut and undermine this life saving program for America’s seniors every chance they get. Many seniors are already struggling to make ends meet and they can’t afford for critical programs to be slashed by extremists.
88 years ago when Social Security became a reality, it lifted millions of Americans out of poverty and guaranteed a social safety net that ultimately created the middle class. We can’t allow these safety nets to be snatched away from Americans.
The wellbeing of seniors is a building block of our nation and we must stand up for them.
I'm standing up against attempts by Congressional Republicans to gut, privatize, and end Social Security. That’s why I’m leading the charge to pass legislation that protects this vital program from cuts and ensures this benefit keeps pace with inflation.
