John, in the battle of people versus petroleum, Montana just ruled in favor of the people.
Here’s the background: In 2020, 16 young Montanans brought a lawsuit forward against the state for its fossil fuel-based energy system, which they argued violates a key provision in their state constitution guaranteeing the right to a “clean and healthful environment.”
After a multi-year long battle in court, the state ruled with the youth, issuing one of the strongest decisions on climate ever issued by a court.
Our young people won’t stand by as state governments relegate our climate to a backseat issue. They’ve proven they can and will fight back when new energy projects threaten our fight to protect our environment and reduce planet-warming emissions.
This ruling is just the beginning, though. Climate activists in states like Hawaii, New York, and Pennsylvania (all of which have environmental provisions in their respective state constitutions) are already looking to replicate the Montana case and hold their states liable for their promise to a healthy and sustainable future for our climate.
This is why grassroots support is so vital to our climate fight, John. While activists fight for climate justice on the ground in their home states, SEEC is leading the national fight to hold our federal government responsible for our climate in Washington.
As we saw both in this case and during the 2022 midterm elections, young people are more motivated than ever by climate. 2024 is poised to be the ultimate litmus test for the impact our environmental issues have on voters across the country, so we need to make sure we’re capitalizing on this huge win out of Montana now.
If sixteen young people can spur a landmark climate win like this, just imagine what we can accomplish if we get our whole country on the same climate page.
Moving forward together,
SEEC PAC
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
