Where the 2024 GOP Presidential Candidates Stand on Voting Rights and Democracy ([link removed])

By Devon Hesano

Here are some updates from today.
* The Texas Supreme Court denied ([link removed]) Harris County's request to stop enforcement of Senate Bill 1750 as litigation continues. The law eliminates Harris County's appointed election administrator and splits election duties between the county clerk and tax assessor's offices, both of which are elected positions.
* The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled ([link removed]) oral argument for Oct. 6 in an appeal of a case challenging Louisiana’s congressional map. The state’s congressional map — which was blocked ([link removed]) in June 2022 for likely violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — remains blocked as litigation continues.
* John Eastman, one of former President Donald Trump’s attorneys, surrendered ([link removed]) to officials at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia. His bail was set at $100,000. Eastman was indicted on nine criminal counts related to subverting ([link removed]) the 2020 presidential election.
+ Trump posted ([link removed]) on Truth Social that he will surrender to Fulton County authorities on Thursday. Trump agreed to a bail of $200,000.

Here are some updates from the last few days.
* Yesterday, civil rights attorney Natasha Merle was sworn ([link removed]) in as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York. In June, Merle was the 100th federal district court judge confirmed ([link removed]) by Senate Democrats.
* On Thursday, two Arizona voters filed ([link removed]) a fringe lawsuit ([link removed]) seeking to invalidate the results of the 2022 midterm election results, 255 days after Arizona certified ([link removed].) the election. The plaintiffs, including one Cochise County official, are no strangers to election subversion ([link removed]) .

Here’s what to expect coming up.
* With the GOP primary debates kicking off tomorrow night, we released our detailed guide on the candidates' stances on democracy and voting rights. Check out our 2024 GOP presidential resource page here ([link removed]) !
