This year, a committee of maternal health specialists released a review of Georgia’s high maternal mortality rate. The statistics are shocking:
89% of pregnancy-related deaths had at least some chance of being prevented.
Many pregnancy related-deaths happened within the first 60 days postpartum.
Bias and discrimination probably contribute to at least 15% of pregnancy-related deaths.
Black woman are two times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.
Furthermore, the highest maternal mortality rate in Georgia was found to be in the southwest region of Georgia, a region I represent in Congress.
Earlier this month, I introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Healthy Moms and Babies Act to combat the maternal mortality crisis, modernize our health care system, and improve health outcomes for women and children. The bill would increase services and access to care, support women and babies with new technology like telehealth, and take more steps on reducing our maternal mortality.
We must do more to support women and meet their health care needs. We have a responsibility to women and children across the country to combat the maternal mortality crisis.
