Level Up your journalism game to improve your newsroom — and your career
[link removed]
Kristen Hare covers and teaches on the transformation of local news for the Poynter Institute.
Poynter faculty Kristen Hare is an expert in local journalism. She's spent the last decade working in and with local newsrooms — and especially with early-career journalists.
She said she began to see two trends intersect with specific results.
"First, and this will be no surprise to many editors, I see a flattening of newsrooms that, as they also shrink, means there are fewer people to help newer journalists learn our profession," she said. "I’m not talking about basic grammar or AP Style. I’m talking about the things you learn by working with other journalists, like how to develop narrative writing skills, or how to start investigative work, or how to handle the big demands of the job itself."
She said early-career journalists may lack those skills, but they are hungry to build them.
"I was lucky to work with several levels of editors, peers and mentors in my first jobs," Hare said, noting how stories of mentorship are prized among journalists.
She built Level Up ([link removed]) , now in its second year, in an attempt to fill some of those gaps.
"Reporters who took the class created stories out of our homework assignments, built projects they’d always hoped for and nailed skills they’ll use toward long careers in our industry," she said.
Read below to get the details on this upcoming seminar ([link removed]) (hurry — applications close Aug. 31), and see what other Poynter opportunities might help fill gaps.
