Strengthen child labor laws now!
|
Dear Friend,
It should go without saying, but we all want to live in a world where corporations aren’t exploiting children for profit. Unfortunately, around the globe, child labor under terrible conditions is all too common. And increasingly, in the United States, children as young as 10 are working long hours, late into the night, with dangerous machines.
In just the last handful of months, a 16-year-old died from injuries received while working at a Wisconsin sawmill1, children were discovered operating meat processing equipment, and not one but two 10-year-olds were working at a McDonald’s location.2
And these are just a few examples. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of children employed in violation of child labor laws is up two hundred and eighty-three percent since 2015.3
Despite this sharp increase, there is a growing push to weaken child labor laws. Several states have introduced or enacted legislation to loosen child labor protections, endangering children’s lives and distracting them from their education and extracurricular activities.
This is a direct attack on the safety and well-being of our children. That’s why we’re joining a coalition of organizations demanding congressional action to strengthen child labor laws. Will you sign the petition supporting this important initiative?
