If you are planning to travel internationally within the year or next year, be sure to check your passport's expiration date as soon as possible.
The State Department has seen an increased demand for passport renewals, and processing times have significantly increased from previous years.
If your situation is an emergency that requires immediate attention (an urgent passport request, an ill family member overseas, etc.) please call my district office in Newnan at 770-683-2033 (after submitting the digital privacy release) in order to make my staff aware of the time sensitivity of your inquiry.
I'm also including some passport renewal tips below, along with a one-pager with information.
- It is recommended to renew your passport at least 6 months prior to travel.
- Current processing times for passports are 10 to 13 weeks for routine processing and 7 to 9 weeks for expedited processing. However, both may vary due to the volume of applications.
- It may take up to 2 weeks for applications to arrive by mail at a passport agency or center and up to 2 weeks to receive a completed passport in the mail after being printed by the State Department.
- The State Department recommends not traveling with a passport if its expiration date is within 6 months of your date of return to the United States.
