and colleagues analyzing whether the most financially vulnerable hospitals actually received federal support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 Relief Payments Were Appropriately Targeted To help address the financial burden of the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress allocated $178 billion to the Provider Relief Fund (PRF). PRF grants were distributed to hospitals and other health care providers in 2020.
In their article in the August issue of Health Affairs, Anuj Gangopadhyaya and his team of coauthors investigate the targeting of PRF payments, and explore whether PRF grants were distributed to those most financially vulnerable hospitals.
They find that PRF
payments were appropriately targeted, and that "PRF payments were allocated to the most financially vulnerable hospitals…In the absence of PRF payments, hospitals that received greater PRF support intensity would have substantially lower margins relative to hospitals that received lower PRF support intensity…"
