August 21, 2023

Dear John:

I count myself truly lucky that I get to spend August in Minnesota. I get to spend time at home with loved ones and I also get to spend more time with people across the 7th District. For example, I was recently honored to join two communities in honoring their local legends.

I went to Vergas during Looney Days to dedicate the post office in honor of Jon Glawe, who served the community as a mailman for thirty six years. I introduced the legislation for this dedication, and I was wonderful to spend time with Mr. Glawe's family and community that loved him and misses him so dearly.

I also attended the Officer Decker Memorial Dedication in Cold Spring to honor Officer Tom Decker, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in 2012, and to honor all those like him who felt called to join the force and served admirably. I hope that future generations will see this memorial and grow up understanding and respecting law enforcement.

Holding China Accountable on Biotech Corn Ban

This week, United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai announced that the U.S. will be establishing a United States - Mexico - Canada (USMCA) dispute settlement panel regarding Mexico's ban on American genetically modified corn.

Our government needs to ensure fair access to the Mexican market. I have been encouraging the Ambassador to take stronger action against Mexico's unscientific ban since I spoke with her directly during a Ways & Means Committee hearing in March. And Congressman Adrian Smith and I sent her a letter urging her to implement this dispute settlement panel in June. I am glad to see this administration finally taking action.

Congressional App Challenge

Students from Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District are invited to create and submit their own app for the annual Congressional App Challenge! The competition is open to all middle and high school students who meet eligibility requirements. Winners will be selected by panels of judges drawn from the local community and will be eligible to be featured on display in the U.S. Capitol building and on the Congressional App Challenge website. You can register for entry here.

Fall Internships

My office is now accepting Fall internship applications for my Willmar, Moorhead, and D.C. offices! If you are interested in first-hand knowledge of how federal legislation works or know someone who is, please visit my website!

Thanks for reading!

As always, my office is open and ready to serve constituents of Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District! Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can do to help. Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
