Gun violence is so pervasive in our country, nearly every month we recount the anniversary of a mass shooting—reliving the anguish, anger, and trauma seared into our collective memory.

There is scarcely a day that goes by when we are not left wondering when or where the next tragedy will unfold. And every day the families of victims of mass shootings wonder who their loved ones would be if they hadn’t been taken too soon.

We don’t have to live this way. The vast majority of Americans want sensible gun legislation, but the NRA and the rest of the gun lobby spend a fortune lobbying elected officials, drafting legislation, and using coercive tactics to undermine the will of the people and block progress.

Sadly, Congressman Mike Lawler is in the pocket of the NRA. He opposes a ban on assault weapons and empowers Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who refuses to bring a universal background checks bill to the House floor for a vote.

The status quo is shameful. There is so much more Congress can do to get weapons of war off our streets and keep our communities safe. Add your name to my petition to hold the gun lobby accountable and demand action so we don’t have to relive one more devastating tragedy.

Our schools, grocery stores, places of worship, movie theaters, and concert venues are not safe. And it’s long past time to act and make them safe once again.

Following the horrific tragedy in Uvalde, Texas last year, I helped pass the first major gun legislation in over 30 years—hallmark legislation that President Biden signed into law.

But the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was the bare minimum; we cannot call it good enough. We must pass universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and enact basic safety regulations that most Americans want.
