Youth will be on center stage at the Wisconsin Organize to Win Summit this coming Saturday. Featured speakers will include teen climate activists Stephanie Salgado and Max Prestigiacomo. Stephanie spent the early part of her childhood in Honduras and saw the impact of the climate crisis up close and personal there. She's now a leader of the Youth Climate Action Team and member of the governor's climate change task force. Max is running for a city council seat and stands to become the youngest elected official in America on April 7.
Carl Fields also will be there Saturday. Carl is a young man too, but much of what he has seen has been from the confines of a prison cell. He made what he readily admits were horrible choices as he lashed out in pain and anger after his mother was killed in 2000 in a random shooting and paid a steep price for those mistakes. But he has transformed his life, now working as a program manager at a drop-in center for the homeless in an Episcopal church in Racine and serving as a mentor and counselor for ex-inmates while at the same time becoming a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform. If you haven't met Carl before, you don't want to miss this chance. He is a remarkable human being.
Another special guest at Saturday's summit will be immigration lawyer Shabnam Lotfi. Shabnam came to the U.S. from Iran when she was 4 and now helps immigrants throughout the country and the world.
Shabnam, Carl, Stephanie, Max and many others will be there Saturday offering inspiration and insight. And then we'll be doing hands-on training and organizing with the goal of bringing about transformational change up and down the ballot, first on April 7 when Wisconsin holds its presidential primary as well as spring elections at the state and local levels and then again on November 3.
