What Does Generative AI Mean for Bird and Nature Photography?
Artificial intelligence can generate uncanny and increasingly realistic wildlife imagery. So, we put it to the test using images from the 2023 Audubon Photo Awards.

We asked the six photographers who won this year’s contest to describe their photos in a few sentences to someone who can’t see the image. With their permission, we fed their descriptions into a popular AI image generator. Take a look at the results.

In an essay, contributor Allen Murabayashi considers what these rapid technological changes mean for conservation and wildlife photography.
