Emails reveal that a present high-ranking official within the Department of Justice urged Vijaya Gadde, former head of trust and safety at Twitter, to eliminate tweets containing proof of election irregularities in Georgia.
Vanita Gupta, currently serving as associate U.S. attorney general under President Biden, expressed her appreciation for Gadde's response over the weekend regarding the flagged perilous tweets. This email, dated January 3, 2021, was sent merely four days prior to Gupta's nomination for her current position by President Biden.
Gupta also communicated her intention to involve Lauren Groh-Wargo and Esosa Ose from Fair Fight, an organization founded by Stacey Abrams in 2018 to combat "voter suppression" in Georgia. Gupta aimed for direct interaction between them and Gadde's team responsible for monitoring disinformation and threats pertaining to Georgia elections. Gupta stressed the urgency of swift action due to the real-time and immediate potential harm.
Fair Fight Action, established by Stacey Abrams in 2018 to address "voter suppression" in Georgia, was the organization involved in the correspondence.
Among the tweets singled out for potential removal by Gupta was a report by James O’Keefe discussing alleged voter fraud in Georgia. This report featured an undercover discussion with Adam Seely, the Managing Director at the food pantry Emmaus House, which was allegedly utilized as the address for thousands of voter registrations.
In the conversation, Seely acknowledged the possibility of thousands using the pantry's address for voter registration. He expressed astonishment at discovering deceased individuals among the registrants. Such misrepresentation of residency on voter registration documents is a breach of Georgia law, punishable by a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
In response to Gupta's email, Gadde concurred and offered to establish contact between her team and Twitter's on-call censorship units. Gadde stated, "I’m copying a few of my colleagues – they can escalate any issues to our on-call review teams."
Reggie McCrimmon, another executive at Twitter, requested Fair Fight to provide specifics of the tweets they wanted removed. McCrimmon asked for details such as links to the tweets or accounts in question for internal escalation and appropriate action.
A few months after this email exchange, when Gupta had firmly secured her role as the third-ranking official in the Biden DOJ, James O’Keefe's Twitter account was permanently suspended.
