It sounds like a chapter out of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it’s true. In Nebraska, a 19-year-old has just been sentenced to jail for accessing abortion care. This, after the state demanded the release of private Facebook conversations between the woman and her mother (while her mother is awaiting sentencing). Violations of our fundamental rights to privacy and bodily autonomy are becoming increasingly commonplace as right-wing lawmakers stack our courts with their allies while criminalizing access to reproductive health care.
The fallout from the conservative Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade is only beginning.
This month, the Senate takes its annual summer break, but we can’t rest until we restore our fundamental rights, like reproductive freedom, by taking back our courts from the Far Right. The Senate adjourned with 70 judicial vacancies. That’s 70 openings where judges could be making a difference every single day in millions of Americans’ lives and preventing travesties like the one above from taking place.

For decades, the Far Right has used its power and influence to stack the federal court system with judges who undermine our basic liberties like our rights over our own bodies, the freedom to vote, and fundamental equality for LGBTQ+ individuals and other minorities.
Nebraska’s prosecution of a teenager and her mother for obtaining an abortion is just the latest example of how this pipeline of extreme right-wing judicial activism threatens our fundamental rights and liberties.
The decision sets a terrifying precedent for all people who seek an abortion, and for people who simply help those considering abortions. We must take action to end the Far Right’s attacks on our freedoms.
Thanks to the support of people like you, we’ve already confirmed a total of 140 judges committed to equal rights, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. She joins 103 district or trial court judges, and 36 judges on the crucial federal courts of appeals. But President Biden, who had been ahead of the previous three presidents for the number of judges confirmed at this point in their presidencies, has now fallen behind Trump and Bush.
We cannot let up on the pressure. There are 70 critical judicial seats open and many more life-changing decisions to come. We must take action right now to demand that the Senate confirm nominees who will protect our basic human rights.
Only a tiny fraction of court cases ever make it to the Supreme Court (less than 1%!), which makes lower federal courts an extremely important buffer protecting our rights from ruthless right-wing lawmakers and their allies. The need to fill these vacant seats with judges who will uphold and protect our constitutional rights is vital!
