By now you’ve heard the news of what happened in Ohio. Ahead of a November vote to protect abortion access through a referendum, the GOP tried to make it harder to amend the state constitution by requiring all amendments to receive at least 60% of the vote, rather than a simple majority.

Thankfully, Ohio voters saw right through Republicans’ anti-democratic tricks and voted no. This isn’t the first – and won’t be the last – attempt by Republicans to warp the democratic process. In a post- Roe country where access to reproductive health care is decided by each state, we’re going to see a lot more GOP attempts to take away abortion rights.

That’s why I’m writing to you today. What happened in Ohio sends a strong message to anti-choice Republicans, and to those forces willing to subvert democracy to try to get their way. But abortion isn’t directly on the ballot everywhere and some Republican-controlled states have been able to effectively ban abortion. It’s more important than ever that we expand our Democratic Senate majority so we can codify Roe v. Wade into law. Can you chip in $5 today to send me back to Washington so we can get it done? And of course, we can’t forget the Supreme Court’s role. Far-right donors spent millions to capture the Court and fill it with anti-abortion justices eager to shred precedent and unleash Republican state legislatures to carry out an extreme agenda.

Democrats have a lot of work ahead of us. We’ve got to clean up the dark money mess at the Supreme Court. And we’ve got to secure the votes in the Senate to codify Roe into law and protect access to abortion once and for all.
