Good morning. If you are following the presidential debates, you know that socialism is a hot-button issue in America right now. But how much do people really know about this toxic ideology? Heritage’s distinguished fellow in conservative thought, Dr. Lee Edwards, explains everything Americans need to know about socialism. Meanwhile, the push to replace the Electoral College is in full swing on the left; find out why this would be catastrophic for the country. Lastly, the Trump administration is taking aim at “sanctuary cities.” Read on to learn how the administration is counterattacking states and local jurisdictions that obstruct federal immigration policy.

Here’s What Americans Need to Know About Socialism
With socialism’s popularity rising in the United States, it’s more important than ever that Americans know the facts about Karl Marx’s inherently flawed ideology. That is why Heritage’s Lee Edwards, distinguished fellow in conservative thought, has been working hard to explain the true nature of socialism. In his article, “What Americans Must Know About Socialism,” he explains, “This is the reality of socialism—a pseudo-religion grounded in pseudo-science and enforced by political tyranny.” In his most recent article, he refutes the often-used claim by leftists that socialism has never failed because it has never been tried, citing three modern countries that tried and ultimately rejected socialism. You can read about those countries, and why they rejected socialism.

Progressives’ Plan for Replacing the Electoral College Would be Disastrous
There have been more and more calls from the left to scrap the Electoral College and replace it with a new scheme: the National Popular Vote (NPV). A new report from Hans von Spakovsky, Heritage’s senior legal fellow and manager of the Election Law Reform Initiative, explains why this proposal is direly misguided. “The NPV is both unconstitutional and bad public policy. It would devalue the minority interests that the Founders sought to protect, create electoral administrative problems, and radicalize the U.S. political system,” writes von Spakovsky. Find out more about why the NPV would be so disastrous, and why we need the Electoral College.

The Administration Is Pushing Back Against Sanctuary Cities, Not A Moment Too Soon
The Trump administration has launched a counterattack against California, New Jersey, and King County, Washington, for their “sanctuary city” policies. In a new article, Heritage experts Lora Ries and Hans von Spakovsky explain why this move is a welcome one. “States and local jurisdictions that provide a safe haven for dangerous criminal aliens and obstruct federal immigration enforcement are on notice,” write Ries and von Spakovsky. “States cannot be forced to enforce federal immigration law, but they cannot obstruct or otherwise try to thwart federal enforcement. That is exactly what California, New Jersey, and King County are doing.” Read more about the administration’s lawsuits and why they are so important for national security.

Members of Congress recently introduced two bills that include policy proposals from Heritage Foundation experts. The first bill, the Accelerate Long-Term Investment Growth Now (ALIGN) Act, is designed to help keep the economy growing and wages rising by making the expensing portion of the 2017 Tax and Jobs Cut Act permanent instead of expiring in 2022. The second bill, the Stop Greenlighting Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants Act, seeks to restrict funding for states that grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants or fail to share information about criminal aliens with the federal government. “Heritage research has a major influence on Capitol Hill,” said Tommy Binion, Heritage’s vice president of government relations. “As a team, we take great pride in the role that we get to play in bringing Heritage research to the attention of lawmakers.” Read more about these two impacts.
