Welcome to Monday, February 24th, suns and shadows...

Weekend for Bernie's.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) handily won the Nevada caucus, solidifying his status as the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination.

After less-than-stellar showings in Iowa and New Hampshire, former Vice President Joe Biden clinched a second-place win. Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., finished third. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts came in fourth.

"In Nevada, we have just put together a multigenerational, multiracial coalition, which is going to not only win in Nevada, it's going to sweep this country," Sanders enthused at a rally in San Antonio, Texas, shortly after news outlets proclaimed his victory.

Sanders was referring to exit polling, which showed Sanders winning young people (56% support among those 44 and under), very liberal voters (49%), and a majority of Hispanic voters. He also did well among black voters and moderates, two groups Biden counts at his base.

Time to Change the Primary Calendar?

Iowa is over (kind of), as is New Hampshire and Nevada. Next up: South Carolina, which will hold its Democratic primary on Saturday, February 29th

South Carolina and Nevada have very different makeups than Iowa and New Hampshire, as this infographic from our friends at USAFacts shows:

PIC-U

While Iowa and New Hampshire have populations that are between 85-90% white, Nevada and South Carolina are much more diverse as white people make up 48.4% and 63.5% of those states’ populations, respectively.

South Carolina has the largest black population (26.5%) of the first four states.

You can see similar demographic breakdowns and trends for other states, and compare them to the U.S. as a whole, at USAFacts.

Do you think the primary calendar should be reordered so that more diverse states vote sooner?
