Millions of students are returning to school this month -- let's make sure they get the education they deserve

Indivisibles,

It's back-to-school time again, and you know what that means:

🤬 And…MAGA groups gearing up for a new year of harassing school boards, imposing book bans, and shaping curriculums to reflect their narrow political and religious ideologies.

Sadly, over the last few years the far-right has turned public schools into a primary battleground in their culture war.

Astroturf groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education have been pushing for book bans, whitewashed history lessons, and policies that make schools outright hostile environments for LGBTQ+ students and teachers.

Thanks to millions of dollars in dark money funding, these groups have rapidly spread across the country -- and in many places, their hateful agenda is already being enforced. Maybe you’re seeing it in your state or even your school district. While they’ve had a head start, we’re not powerless in this fight.

With millions of students returning to school this month and school board races happening this fall, we’ve launched Our States, Our Fates -- a new campaign to resist the MAGA assault on public education and defend the freedom to learn. Through this new program, we’re building a network of Indivisible groups -- including teachers, librarians, parents, and guardians -- to strategize together, share resources and learnings, and support each other in the fight to defend our schools and libraries.

Indivisible groups are showing up to school board meetings to prevent book bans. They’re organizing to expose right-wing astroturf groups and defeat MAGA candidates running on anti-education platforms. And with too many state and local elections going uncontested, some Indivisibles are even throwing their hats into the ring to defend public education.

We have the people power on our side, but we can’t win this fight without investing in the grassroots organizers who are at the heart of this work. We know this is an expensive time of year for many families, but if you can afford to do so, please consider adding one more item to your back-to-school list: Chip in to support Indivisible groups fighting to stop book bans and defend the freedom to learn.

Indivisibles, like most people in this country, want to feel confident that when they send their kids to school, they will learn the true, complete history of this country, they will have access to books that speak to them and their experiences, and most of all they will feel safe and accepted in the classroom.

It’s disheartening that this is something we have to fight for rather than a given. But we also know that the MAGA agenda is unpopular and if we show up and rally to defend our schools and libraries, we will win this fight.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
