MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS August 2023 CPL Report Total Michigan CPL holders in July dropped by 650 people resulting in 811,905 CPL holders as of August 1, 2023. This mid-summer decrease is typical as class numbers fall off due to family vacations. A similar drop happened in July 2022. This month's full report from the Michigan State Police can be read HERE. August Legislative Update The Michigan Legislature has been on summer recess over the past month. Consequently, there are no new bill introductions or legislative activity to report. Last Wednesday, the Michigan State Capitol Commission (MSCC) voted 4-2 to provide an exemption for currently serving state lawmakers with a concealed carry permit under the new Capitol Building security policy and weapons ban now in effect. MCRGO opposes the ban. In other news, Rep. Kevin Coleman (D-Westland) and Rep. Lori Stone (D-Warren) won their respective mayoral primaries earlier this month and advance to this November's general election. If both win their general elections, they will resign from the Michigan House of Representatives as soon as the results are certified, leaving a 54-54 split. Without a majority, it is likely that legislative Democrats would move to adjourn session for the year early. This would also allow the planned February 27 presidential primary to happen and would speed up the effective date of other legislation passed earlier this year including the three gun control measures. Special elections to fill the vacancies would occur in the late winter.
