John, This week, the Senate will take its final vote on the Virginia Values Act. Once it does, the bill will be on its way to the Governor’s desk, and he’s already promised to sign it! There’s one hitch though: In these final days, opponents of LGBTQ equality have stepped up their game, and are throwing lie after lie about this bill at our lawmakers as they prepare to take these final votes. They’re claiming the Virginia Values Act threatens religious freedom—but that’s just false. No religious institution not open to the public will have to alter how it operates in any way if this bill passes. Furthermore, Virginians of faith have largely supported LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections, as the more than 150 members of our faith leader coalition demonstrate. They’re also trotting out some of the worst fearmongering about transgender people and restrooms, but the truth is transgender people value safety just like everyone else, and the Virginia Values Act will actually help us live our lives more safely. John, lawmakers need to hear the truth before they take this final vote. Will you send a message to your Delegate and Senator debunking this misinformation about the Virginia Values Act—and urge them to vote YES? Thanks, Vee Lamneck Executive Director | |
