Supporting Our First Responders

I am proud to continue my support for legislation to provide benefits for our first responders. Currently, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) prevents full-time volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel from joining the North Carolina state retirement system, despite the fact these dedicated public servants provide the same emergency and community services as those employed by the state.

This legislation creates a rule to clarify that 501c public safety agency firefighters and EMS workers can join the governmental plan of the locality or state they are contracted to work in. I previously introduced this legislation in the 117th Congress and cosponsored this legislation to support these brave men and women.

Celebrating the American Legion World Series

Recently, I took to the House floor in celebration of the 2023 American Legion World Series in Shelby. The ALWS has a tremendous history and I know the players and fans enjoyed their time in Cleveland County. Congratulations to the young men that represented their states over the past two weeks.

Lincoln County is home to the oldest continuing camp meeting in North Carolina. Every August, families return to Rock Spring Campground to worship with their neighbors and keep the tradition alive. This annual gathering is an important part of Lincoln County history and is a testament to the values of our community.
